And the winner is….

Drum roll, please. LOL. Anyway, the winner of the Soul of a Vampire giveaway is Kristina Haecker! Congrats, Kristina!

So here’s what’s going on for ROW80:

Writing: I’m about 1100 words along on my WIP. I’ve hit a few personal snags that’s kept me from writing as much as I’d like, but I think the rest of the week, and the weekend, will get back to normal.

Print book update: They’ve sent me the proof for Vampires’ Curse, so I’m just waiting on that. I’m also waiting on Anya to finish the print cover for Soul of a Vampire. I asked her to change something, so it’s my fault it’s not finished. LOL.

Health: I haven’t worked out yet this week. Monday I was having a major issue with one of my feet, and yesterday I used my lunch hour to write because I was going out to eat last night with a fellow author who lives here in town. (I think she would wish to remain anonymous, LOL.) I didn’t get in until late. I hope to return to my routine tomorrow.

Wednesday Update 10/3/12

What do you mean, it’s October? LOL Where does the time go? I’m loving our fall weather after so much HEAT this summer. So here’s what’s going on:

Writing: I’m still in the midst of editing Soul of a Vampire. My hopeful publishing date was Oct. 4, but I had completely forgotten about our revival at church. Plus, I’ll be in Tallahassee Fri-Sun for a work trip. If I can swing it, I might get it done by the 4th (isn’t that tomorrow?), but we’ll see. Also, I haven’t started on my next WIP yet because of the aforementioned revival. I will probably start on Thursday.

Health: I’ve been faithful in my workouts so far. I’m very, very sore. I’m still working on the eating habits, but I did leave about a third of my lunch on my plate Monday. So that’s progress.

Wednesday Update

I don’t have a lot to report. I’m letting my WIP sit for a few days after finishing, and I plan on starting the editing process tomorrow. I usually don’t have a lot to edit because I do a lot of editing along the way. But when I do the final read through, I always find things to change or add. I rarely find anything I want to take out. Since I’ve been at this writing thing awhile, my first drafts are much cleaner.

On a weird note. You know how Amazon sends you those emails suggesting certain books to read based on other things you’ve bought from them? Amazon sent me an email today suggesting two of my own books to me! That’s never happened before, and I thought it was kind of funny. Hmmm, I wonder if that means they suggested those two books to other customers….

Anniversary Trip Update

I’m not sure if this post will even go through. There’s no wifi in the room and the 3G on my iPad is spotty. I’ve had to respond to comments more than once before anything will go through.

Since I finished my WIP last week, I’m taking a small break from writing while on my anniversary weekend. When I get back, I’ll start my read through/editing/proofing.

Since this was our 30th anniversary, I wanted to do something special. Hubby has lost three wedding bands because he has to take them off for work. I’m still wearing my band and tiny solitaire. So we got stainless steel bands, silver with gold trim, and had our names with hearts between them engraved into them. And our wedding date, too. They look awesome. I’ll do pics later because I can’t get the pics from my iPad to upload to WordPress.

None of you probably know this about me. But I love knives. I also fear them. I think they’re awesome. So I bought a dagger from a shop here. I’ll do a pic of that, too. One year we got our sons swords from this shop. Yeah, real swords.

Since Internet is spotty, I’ll have to wait until I get back home to do my sponsor duties. I’ll check out other blogs later. Bye for now! 🙂

Cover Reveal and Blog Awards!

I’ve been very nervous about every aspect of this book. So the cover is no exception. But I think it’s time to let people see the cover of my current WIP, which will also finally give my title away. This is the first time I’ve ever had the title before starting the story. In fact, it was the title popping into my mind that actually started this story. So, without further ado, here is the fabulous Jimmy Thomas, cover model extraordinaire with “the bottle”. And you have to read the book to understand that part. LOL

Also, on another note, the lovely and sweet Emma Meade nominated me for three blog awards. 🙂 I’m also supposed to tell seven things about myself. I’m going to break the chain (sorry) and not nominate seven more people because I don’t want to miss anyone I should tag. Anyway, here are the awards.



And here are seven things about me:

1. My favorite author is Stephen King.
2. My favorite movie is Half Light.
3. I love roller coasters.
4. I’m a coffee snob…I love the good stuff.
5. I have a very strong southern accent.
6. Hubby and I are about to celebrate our 30th anniversary.
7. And here’s the embarrassing story. One time my husband and I were in a restaurant with another couple. I was wearing a black skirt, black leggings, and black boots. The two men got up and went on out to the car, and my friend and I got up to start on out a couple of minutes later. I realized that for some reason, I couldn’t walk. I looked down, and there was my very white slip down around my ankles. My friend and I burst out laughing, and I reached down and pulled my slip out from around my ankles and put it in my purse. My friend and I were laughing so hard, we could barely walk, and it took us forever to tell the guys what had happened.

Wednesday Check In 8/15/12

What? It’s Wednesday already? How did that happen?

My WIP is coming right along. I might do a cover reveal tomorrow because my cover artist, Anya, is getting antsy, wanting to put it on her website. LOL. Yesterday, I wrote through the scene with the first challenge/riddle. I think it went okay, but I haven’t read back through it yet. I have two more challenges to go before they have to fight a creature. Then I’ll have to do a major action scene which always scares me, but which one of my beta readers says I do well. Action is hard for me to write, but my beta reader said she loved my action scenes in The Gnome, so I hope I can do okay in this book.

How about the rest of you? Are you plodding along? Moving quickly? Doing nothing? I want to know!

A Chat about That

I want to talk very briefly about “that”. No, I’m not talking about something dirty I can’t say so I have to use the word “that”. I’m actually talking about the word “that”. I remember when beta reading for some writers, I had to point out the overuse of the word “that”. I’ve finished proofing Vampires’ Curse to get ready for print, and OH MY STARS! Could I have used “that” any more times? Grrrrr. Now there were a few instances where it made sense to use it for clarification, but most of the time it sounded clunky and made the sentence NOT flow as it should. Most of the time, we don’t need that word. I did notice, since this is a compilation of three novellas, I used it fewer times in the third novella and used it most in the first one. So that means I was getting better at catching it. I even use it in my blog posts sometimes when I don’t need to. I think it goes back to English class or something, because there’s some reason my fingers want to type that word. And it’s perfectly proper and acceptable in every place I used it, but it wasn’t NECESSARY. So for this current WIP, although I know I caught most of them, I’m going to do a “find” on the word document for the word “that”. I wonder how many I’ll find that I don’t need? (I think the previous sentence needed the “that”, LOL.)

Sunday Update 8/12/12

It’s 58 degrees outside. 58! We haven’t seen a temp that low in months. I think the high is supposed to be around 87. I’ll take any temp under 90! 🙂

Word count was pretty good this week. Mon-2092, Thurs-1057, Fri-890, Sat-1678. I’m getting close to the end of my WIP. Just a few more chapters. (My chapters are short.) I think I’ve figured out the riddles, thanks to Anya Kelleye and her father. The next chapter I write should involve the riddles unless I think of something else I want to insert. And I think Anya and I have agreed on a cover for it. I’m so picky, I don’t see how she puts up with me. I ended up ditching a picture she had already bought for the cover. It just didn’t work for me. Seriously, when you find a great cover artist who you can work with, you’ve found a treasure, trust me.

I finally finished final proofing on Vampires’ Curse, so as soon as I make the changes, I’ll be ready to format for print. Then I can tell Anya how many pages it is so she can finish the cover.

I got the material cut out for a blouse and the bottom layer of my skirt.

I’ve been a busy bee. I didn’t mention all the boring housework and laundry. Plus the day job. Wait…I guess I did just mention it. LOL

Setting For My WIP?

Many of you know I’m really struggling to find three riddles for the challenges my two main characters have to face. Now I’m struggling with the location. I’ve known all along that I was going to have to decide where they were going to have to travel to obtain the “object” they have to have. The whole time I was writing this book, I’ve been trying to decide where to have them go. Here’s my dilemma. Should I use a real place or should I make one up? I was going to “pretend” there was another little island past Bermuda, but my husband asked me “What if someone checks to see if it’s a real place?”. But why does it have to be? Authors make up places all the time. Why CAN’T there be an island past Bermuda? What do you guys think? Is it okay to make up islands?

As far as the riddles go, I’m about to go crazy. I’ve even looked on riddle sites to see if there’s something I can adapt to challenges. But most of the riddles are silly or simply won’t work. I’m to the point where I’ll offer to acknowledge someone in the front of my book if they can help me with the riddles. LOL.

My writing of this story is about to stall because I’m getting close to the point where I need the riddles/challenges. Maybe I’ll dream something tonight. 🙂

About My WIP

I’ve been working on my current WIP since April. For the first three months, it was hit or miss in the writing department. Some weeks, I would do some writing, some weeks, not so much. It was a bad three months for writing. But since the beginning of this month, I’ve had some awesome word counts. Everything is flowing nicely, and I’m really loving this story. But will others love it as much as I do? This is a story that I’m hoping with take off on Amazon and B & N like Guardian Vampire did in Jan/Feb of 2011. It’s so frustrating to have something like that happen, and then it not ever happen again. I WANT it to happen again. 🙂

I had almost resigned myself to the fact that I’m more of a novella writer than a novel writer. Before I wrote The Gnome, I had three novels and six novellas published. And a short story. I was SURE The Gnome would be a novel. But when I finished, I didn’t quite have 40K words. You really can’t call something a novel unless it’s 50K, and I was almost 11K short. 😦 At that point, I was sure there would be no more novels for me. I was convinced I didn’t have any more novels in me. But along came my current WIP. I planned it as a novella, but I wasn’t even going to worry about how many words it would turn out to be. I was hoping it would at least be a LONG novella like The Gnome. Now here I am at almost 38K, and there are still more adventures to come. The main characters haven’t yet gone on a journey where there will be challenges and perils. In a little more than 12K, this will become a novel. I’ve been averaging 1K to over 2K in each writing sitting. So even if I only get 1K per day, I could conceivably finish this as a novel in 12-13 days. (Not necessarily consecutive.) This makes me happy. But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop at 50K. I’m just saying I COULD and still call it a novel. 🙂

Here’s a problem, though. This story has flowed so well lately. But when it comes to the challenges the main characters must face, I’m afraid things will come to a screeching halt. The challenges will have riddles involved (and danger), but what if I can’t think of any good riddles? What if my riddles are lame? Eek, this riddle thing is new to me! (I know this almost makes it sound like I’m writing a fantasy book, but no, it really is a paranormal romance. It’s just a little different.) Have any of you ever faced something like this? Have you had to write something that had to be SOLVED? Any advice?
