What? It’s Wednesday already? How did that happen?
My WIP is coming right along. I might do a cover reveal tomorrow because my cover artist, Anya, is getting antsy, wanting to put it on her website. LOL. Yesterday, I wrote through the scene with the first challenge/riddle. I think it went okay, but I haven’t read back through it yet. I have two more challenges to go before they have to fight a creature. Then I’ll have to do a major action scene which always scares me, but which one of my beta readers says I do well. Action is hard for me to write, but my beta reader said she loved my action scenes in The Gnome, so I hope I can do okay in this book.
How about the rest of you? Are you plodding along? Moving quickly? Doing nothing? I want to know!
I worry my description isn’t good enough, but my first beta response loved it? So I decided I’m perhaps not the best jugde of my own inadequacies. 🙂 So are you it seems 🙂 Good going on your progress. X
Of course, my beta readers DO have some things to point out that need changing. LOL. It’s always good to have beta readers (especially ones who are good editors and proofers!) to point out your strengths and weaknesses.
Book covers are meant to be drooled over. 😉 And action scenes can take me days to write, but I always find it worth it. Good luck with that. We will not discuss my writing. It is sad and pathetic and on life support until September.
Well, the cover model on this book, whom I’ve used a few times before, is definitely drool-worthy. 🙂 I hope I can get through the action scenes without stressing too much.
I’m sure your writing will pull through. 🙂
It sounds like you’ve got a lot going on, but you’re right on target. I, too, don’t trust my own judgment of my writing skill, relying on beta readers instead to confirm or allay my fears.
My own writing has been on hiatus for eight months, until today. I discovered ROW80, and I’m excited to get back into the swing of things.
Congrats on your coming cover reveal!
Beta readers are essential in my opinion.
I’m glad you found ROW80! I hope you find us friendly and helpful. Good luck getting your writing back on track! 🙂
Looking forward to the cover reveal. My writing has been going a lot better than normal at the moment. Just passed the midway point of my WIP so feeling optimistic.
i like cover reveals. I’m always interested to see what everyone’s cover artist has come up with.
That’s great that your writing is going so well. It always feels good when everything flows just right.
Cover reveal! Whoo-hoo!
Everyone can always tell when I’m working on action scenes because I start moving around in my seat, testing out how I’m describing it. Apparently, I make the expressions my characters make when I write, too, because my roommate always comes into the room and asks what’s wrong and I have to explain that so-and-so is thinking really hard or is upset…
Good luck with the rest of the WIP! Sounds like you’re on a roll.
That reminds me of my oldest son when he plays video games. LOL. Maybe I should act my scenes out. It couldn’t hurt.
I sincerely hope that the cover model you speak of is Jimmy Thomas. Gah! I do enjoy looking at that man. Ahem…moving on…
I love a great action scene. It gets my hair up! Since writing Claiming The Prize, I haven’t had to write much action in that form. I miss it. My next historical novel – not the one I will publish in a few weeks, the shiny-new-idea rattling around in my brain – will have a few battle/raiding scenes, and I hope to bet back to writing serious action. :} Ahh, nothing like a bit of brutality and gore to get the blood up – and to create dichotomy within a character.
@ L.S. Engler…hahaha. I, too, ‘act out’ action scenes and expressions both when I read and when I write. My son was my partner in crime as we orchestrated the fight scenes in Claiming The Prize. The scenes would have lacked without him!
Of course it’s Jimmy Thomas! 🙂 Anya is going to get to meet him at Arizona Dreaming next year. I couldn’t go because I had other obligations. 😦
Brutality and gore. LOL.
Cover reveals are so much fun. Can’t wait to see it!
Tomorrow! 🙂
Glad things are coming along!! I know you’ve been working hard on those riddles, so good to see them getting out on the page. Can’t wait to see the cover 😀 (Especially now that I hear it’s drool-worthy lol!) I’m plodding along – slowly, but surely. Have a great rest of the week!
Jimmy is always drool-worthy. 😉
Slowly but surely is good!
Your book sounds so interesting.
I always struggle to write description and action too (without using dialogue.)
Good luck with it and let me know how you get on.

Laura, I hope people find it interesting. I’ve worked hard on this one.
I prefer writing dialogue to anything else. If I could write a whole book of dialogue I would be happy. LOL. But I know I have to do the descriptions and the action. It’s just a little harder for me.
Whenever I have to right an action or fight sequence, I end up remembering how David Fincher approached a scene in Fight Club.
There’s a vicious scene where the Narrator is just hammering away at this pretty boy, and instead of seeing every punch, you see the horrified faces of the crowd gathered around. I tend to write action scenes by showing everything *but* the action, giving the reader an artistic reflection instead.
It’s interesting how different authors write things in different ways, and yet it still works. I try to not only describe the action, but also how the characters feel without “telling” too much. It’s a balancing act.
I already saw the cover because I read your post last night. It said you had a cover, so I took a peek before going to bed. LOL Great cover and title, btw.
I’m trudging along like a turtle. I keep telling myself the turtle won the race, not the hare, but it’s still frustrating. 😀
Hopefully, when you read back over the riddles, they’ll flow well with the book. As for your action scene, I thought it turned out really well for The Gnome. There’s a balance between the scene going too quick and dragging on, and I think you nailed it perfectly.
You were up late. LOL. I usually schedule posts for about 2:00 AM, but that means they come through earlier for other time zones. I should probably change my times, but it’s okay if someone reads it early. 🙂 I actually love the title. This is the only time I’ve ever thought of a title before writing the book. I have a really hard time with titles.
The turtle DID win the race. It’s better to be slow and steady than hopping all over the place.
I hope the riddles are working. I think they are. I’m sort of looking forward to the main fight scene now. They’ll be fighting a “creature”. And thanks for letting me know you thought I did okay with The Gnome. That book was fun to write after I got past my nerves on the action scenes.
