I was actually going to post about something else today, but then I realized it was the day for our ROW80 midweek check-in. I’ll do my other post tomorrow, I guess. 🙂
I had a a really kick butt word count on Monday (I’ll post actual numbers on Sunday). Last night, I wanted to write, but several things hindered me.
1. One problem was my hands. I’ve mentioned this before. My hands used to bother me a lot, but for the past few years, they have been much better. In the last few months, they’ve started hurting again, right in my thumb joint. I don’t know what has changed, but that Dragon software is looking better and better.
2. I needed to establish how much time it takes to get from point A to point B traveling at a certain amount of knots (this is on a ship), so I had to do some research. Luckily, I found the time frame I had already written in works fine. Whew! And I’m still stumped by the riddles I need for the challenges. I could write the scenes that come after the three challenges, but I’m a very linear writer, and I just CAN’T. It’s like reading a book out of order.
3. I also spent some time with my mom and her computer. If I don’t write early, I get too tired to write. But as much as my writing means to me, my mom is more important. She comes first. And she’s one of the biggest supporters of my writing, as well as one of the most awesome people I know. 🙂
I tried proofing Vampires’ Curse (I NEED to get this in print as soon as possible!) last night, and I got through a few pages, but I was trying to do it on the living room couch. There was a Big Bang Theory marathon on some channel that my husband was watching, and Sheldon just always creeps in when I’m trying to do something. He’s just so FUNNY, I can’t help but listen. The reason I’ve been writing/proofing in the living room is because the chair in my office is just too uncomfortable to sit in for long. I’m really needing a new chair, but I’m putting off spending the money. But I’m going to have to soon.
What’s up with the rest of you?
Hi there, Sorry about your thumb I know how frustrated you must feel. I do have a Dragon software kit which will come in handy (oops a pun) . I have the same thing with the thumb and wrist. Too much wear and tear. I am having an operation, will mean typing without pain soon. I do hope yours clears up. We do seem to be leading parallel paths at the moment. It’s my back too but hubby kindly bought me a new chair with a wire sprung back appliance that supports the oid and small of the back. Thankfully it has done the trick.
All the best – keep writing. :))
Thanks, Katy. If my current book sells well, I think I’m going to reward myself with a new chair. A nice one! 🙂 As for the Dragon software, I’m seriously considering it. I know it’s a big expense, but it might be worth it. Does the microphone come with it?
Good look with your operation. It will be nice not to have the pain!
Damn that Sheldon for interrupting us when we should be writing. 🙂
Sounds like you’re making great progress. I’m looking forward to seeing Vampires’ Curse in print. That’s one book I’d love to see on my bookshelf.
Sheldon is just SO funny. I don’t usually like sitcoms very much, but Big Bang is lovely, geeky humor. 🙂
Thanks so much, Emma! Vampires’ Curse should have been done already, but I’m having problems with my organizational skills right now. Bleh! Maybe by this weekend….
First, I do hope your hands feel better soon. At the very least, I hope you discover the source of the returning pain. Being in pain sucks, and I can only imagine the frustration that must add to your writing. Second, family first, always. I totally agree with you. And lastly, Sheldon is awesome, but Raj is my favorite. Though, Amy Farrah Fowler is giving him some competition.
Thanks so much, Gloria! Hopefully, I’ll figure this out. Trips to the orthopedist back when this first bothered me were no help. 😦
Yep, family first!
That whole group of friends on Big Bang work together so well. What makes Sheldon so funny is he’s not trying to be. He doesn’t get sarcasm. And he’s so arrogant, and there’s no filter on his mouth. (I know people like that, LOL) I would hate for any of the characters to leave the show. They all have important roles that make the show a success.
I, too, am a linear writer. S’s creep me right the F out.
No, but seriously, I don’t like to write scenes out of order, either.
Matt, I’m sitting here at my desk at work, laughing my head off. If anyone comes in, they’ll think I’ve lost my mind.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that hates to write out of order. I hear writers talk about doing that sometimes, and I have to cringe.
LOL, I would make you cringe. I work on any scene any time 😀 I just hop all over the place, but you’ve read my check-in so I bet you could have guessed that! Glad the research went ok and you got to spend time with your mom. And I’m sorry to hear about your hands and your chair. Mine is killing me as well. Right now, it’s actually a stool that I’ve taken putting a pillow on to make it less uncomfortable. I think I need to invest in a new chair too. Have a good rest of the week!
Oh, Lauren, that just hurts my linear heart. Hahahahaha. Well, the way I look at it is, if it works for you, do it. We all have different ways of writing and none of them are right or wrong.
I’ve always disliked research, but lately I’m finding it interesting. I really enjoyed researching the Amazon rain forest for the third Libby Fox novella. With online resources, things are easier. I had no trouble figuring out how long it would take the ship to get just past Bermuda in my current WIP. 🙂
I have a chair that doesn’t have enough padding. I even have a small cushion on the seat, but it still isn’t comfortable. I need something with a good seat and good back support. Writers should have good equipment just like athletes. LOL. The problem is affording it.
I am feeling your pain! lol…about the chair that is…
I like to curl up when writing/reading/proofing. Unfortunately, typing and proofing must be done in my most uncomforatble computer chair. I will need to invest soon in a comfy chair, too. Sigh. I hate spending money…:{
Glad to hear the writing is going on so smoothly! Interesting research, also. I don’t have much knowledge where ships are concerned, so I’ll look forward to learning something new *shrugs in embarrassment since my husband was a sailor* lol. I’m researching Native American history right now…and I’m completely captivated! Research is one of my favorite parts of the writing process.
We both need new chairs! I, too, like to curl up when proofing, but I really do better writing at a desk. Of course, I type everything to start with, unlike some people I know. LOL
My biggest problem with research has been that it took up time when I could have been writing. I’m kind of impatient sometimes. 🙂 My husband was also a sailor, so when I asked him how fast a cruise ship usually went, he told me about 20 knots. Well, I had to see for myself, and he was right. So I decided the ship they were on was smaller than the huge cruise ships, which gave them a little more speed. I got the trip down to 24 hours or a little more, which was the time frame I was writing.
So, is your next book going to be a Native American romance?
Oh, it is so hard to be comfortable at a computer sometimes…my neck plagues me, so I keep my weights near my desk and use them from time to time. (I got them from the physical therapist after my car accident). Good luck with the hands….and I’ve never heard of Dragon software. Hmm…
Thanks for visiting my check-in.
Maybe I should pick up my weights and use them from time to time while I’m writing. They are right there in the same room. 🙂
Dragon software is something a lot of authors have been talking about. It’s voice recognition software, so you apparently are dictating your book to the computer. I imagine you would have to go back and fix some wrong words and punctuation, though.
