Well, work is still hopping at my full-time job, but it’s slowing down a LITTLE. Except on Mondays and Tuesdays. So here’s my plan for awhile. Instead of fretting about not getting writing done, I’m going to change my goals to only include three writing days per week. Those days will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. They seem to be my slowest days at work (and no work on Saturday), so there will be less stress. I’ve been coming home with headaches the past two days and feeling just awful. Then I feel bad for not writing. As soon as things slow down a little more, I’ll add Tuesday back. Then we’ll see how that goes. I want to focus more on my house since I’ve started working on FlyLady’s routines. I really want to have a house that is company ready at all times, with no scrambling to hide stuff in the bedroom. If anyone is interested in her way of getting our houses looking great, here is the website: FlyLady. I think it’s a great way to get organized, and when our houses are organized, other things in our lives follow right behind. π
Have any of you tried FlyLady’s methods?
Good for you! I’ve done the Flylady routine before.ni just got out of the habit. Don’t really know why. It’s a good system though.
FlyLady is the best! I have a few of her products, too. I’m still taking baby steps, but I’ll eventually get it. The first thing she wants everyone to do is shine their sinks. I know that sounds strange, but it really makes you feel good to wake up in the mornings and have a shiny sink. π
Lauralynn, don’t stress out about not writing for a bit. Give yourself a break, so you have a chance to come back fresh. My rule for myself is that if I don’t feel up to writing today (or this week if life stuff crops up), I’ll get the rest and mental space I need to come back stronger tomorrow. I know I don’t do my best writing when I’m treating it like a chore, or one more thing to check off my to-do list. Breaks are NOT a bad thing. Think marathon. π
I know you’re right, J.R. I’ve just been so used to producing faster. But life stuff has been happening, so I definitely need to give myself a break. The good thing is that my story has been running through my head a bit lately, so I’m about back into the game.
Oh, and by the way, I took almost a complete pass on writing this week, too. I think I got 200 words in one day this week, but I didn’t even track it. Like you, work has been nutzo! And April is going to be even more crazy at work, so I might be giving up some writing time to get more hours in. Gotta do what you gotta do.
Our busiest month is March, but April is busy, too. The good news is that one of my helpers quit his other job, so I’ll have him at least 6 more hours a week.
You can’t write with a headache. Try out those new writing days, but writing or lack thereof should not make you feel guilty! Writing should be your break from work and reality – at least that’s what it is for me.
You’re right, I can’t write with a headache. There’s no telling what kind of drivel would come out of my brain. I think my headaches have been caused by part stress and part weather changes. Ever time there’s a change in barometric pressure, I get a headache. Weird, huh?
As you know, I just took most of this past month off from writing due to work related issues. It happens. And now I’m super duper excited to get back into writing. I nailed out a quick 750 words yesterday in a half-hour’s time. So I say enjoy a break, after all, work is crazy, and hubby is still broke leaving more housework, there are only 24 hours in a day, so don’t force yourself.
Work can really take time away from our writing, can’t it? Congrats on getting some words in!
I recently read a post about why we should write when we’re stressed out and tired. The idea was that we write at our “best” when we aren’t at our physical best. Needless to say, I think that’s horrible advice. LOL I’ve never been happy with anything I’ve written when I’m overwhelmed and exhausted. I think it’s better to take the time off and get rested up.
I haven’t checked out FlyLady but I will. π
You know, I think I saw that post, but I can’t remember where. I decided not to read it because, like you, I think it’s horrible advice. When I’m physically or mentally tired, or if I just don’t feel good, my writing is NOT at its best.
FlyLady is so cool.
