I’m not going to say too much about the constant casual sex among teenagers in The Vampire Diaries, because Kait Nolan and Susan Bischoff covered that awhile back. Let’s just say I agree with them.
One of the things I find lacking in The Vampire Diaries is the wonderful snarky lines from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I know these are two totally different shows, but I miss the humor. I can’t find anything really funny in TVD.
Okay, here’s the biggest thing I don’t understand about the obsession with TVD…Damon. I’m almost finished with Season One, and I STILL don’t like this vampire. He’s a real jerk. In the last few episodes, he has done some surprisingly humane things (not many), but then he turns around and snaps the neck of an innocent person. But women are OBSESSED with this guy. Personally, I think Stefan is better looking and much sexier. Damon isn’t quite as masculine as Stefan. But fans of the show keep telling me to wait and see how I feel about Damon later. So I’m going to give him a chance. When I started watching the Buffy DVD’s, I thought it would be Angel forever. But my friend told me that she would end up with Spike later. I thought that was the craziest thing I ever heard. How could that awful vampire, Spike, ever hold a candle to the sexy, brooding Angel? But guess how I felt about the whole thing later? It was definitely Spike all the way. And I’m seeing some parallels here. Stefan and Angel are both all broody and full of angst about their pasts. Damon and Spike accept themselves as vampires and don’t feel the guilt. There’s definitely a pattern here. So right now, I’m on Team Stefan. But I’m keeping myself open to the possibility that at some point, my focus will be on Damon…like most of the female population. LOL
For me? I went into the show loving Damon…not as a love interest, but as a *bad guy.* A really bad guy. I enjoyed him because he was a jerk. Then again, I went into the show, expecting to laugh my ass off through it because I just don’t connect well with the teen angst/brooding that it seemed so chock full of. It was going to be a silly guilty pleasure…and Damon’s evilness and snarky lines were another thing to laugh at. (Where as I instantly hated Stefan and Elena anyway, they just irritated me. So anyone there to mess up their lives was just grand to me.)
However, he does start to change and I was pleasantly surprised at the character growth. Of course, I’m not quite sure what I want now… I’m about half way through Season Two, and I’m sadly addicted. My favorite characters being Bonnie, Caroline, and Damon. Elena still gets on my nerves, though Stefan is starting to grow on me. To me, Damon is still an evil guy, but he’s got heartbreak under that evil now…so he’s not just amusing to me anymore. He’s a character I’ve actually come to like.
**Though it probably doesn’t help that I find Stefan’s hair hideous, and Damon better looking. xD
Damon is a great bad guy. But I’ve been so surprised at how many women love him. Everyone has different taste, though, and that’s why we have to have so many different kinds of characters. I don’t really find Damon’s lines that funny, but that may be because I was spoiled by the great lines in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I have to agree with you on Stefan’s hideous hair. I was hoping he would change it in Season Two, so I assume he hasn’t since you’re on Season Two. His face is too long to have that hair sticking up in front like that. But that was a popular style for young guys for awhile.
A funny side note here. I watched three episodes back to back the other night, and when I went to bed, I dreamed about TVD all night long. I kept waking up and then going back to sleep, and I continued dreaming about it. It was really weird. LOL
Where as I missed Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I treated myself to the first season of Buffy for Christmas this year, so the moment my friend and I are done laughing our way through this, I’ll be learning the awesome-ness that is Buffy. ๐ I’ve heard nothing but good things, so I can’t wait!
Nope. No change in the hair style. It’s a complete bummer.
LOL Happened to me too. I swear, there’s something in this show that stays with you, even if you can’t figure out why.
Buffy is and will forever be one of my favorite programs of all time. I will STILL watch something just because any one of the former characters is in it. But that said, I also love The Vampire Diaries. Why? Mainly because it’s dark and gritty and not at all soft and weak like Twilight. Yep, I said it. I like a vampire who will rip someone’s head off or tear out their heart. And yes, I’m talking about Damon. Give it time….I think you’ll learn to love him like we all do. Stefen is a pansy. LOL
See, I don’t see Stefan as a pansy. To me, he’s just nice. And when he drank human blood for awhile, he wasn’t so nice. LOL. I don’t really like my vampires so mean. I like that they have the POTENTIAL for mean, but that they are strong enough to keep that under control. To me, that shows more strength than giving in to their baser desires. But I like them to be able to take out a bad guy if they need to. I just have a problem with them preying on the innocent. It took me a long time to like Spike, although he did crack me up most of the time. I loved him in Season Seven, though.
One of the things I liked about Mick St. John was that he was good, but he could be bad when he NEEDED to. Am I making any sense? Now when I’m talking about not liking the bad vampires, I mean bad as in taking out innocents. There are other ways that I really like bad guys. ๐
