Hubby and I finally got around to watching The Hunger Games last night. I really enjoyed it. But I’m scratching my head about something. Why is everyone comparing this movie to Twilight? I’m hearing things like “this movie was so much better than Twilight” or “Katniss is a much better heroine than Bella”. But why are these two particular movies being compared in the first place? Twilight is a movie about vampires and it’s heavy on the romance. The Hunger Games is a movie about fighting to the death in a futuristic world and it’s sort of light on romance. I can only think of one thing that the movies have in common…they are both considered YA. That’s it. So I’m just kind of puzzled as to why they are being compared. I don’t get it.
As to whether or not I liked the movie, the answer would be a definite yes. It was pretty slow starting out, and hubby and I were kind of yawning over it, prepared to write it off as a movie we shouldn’t have spent money renting. But once the action started, it was pretty intense. Really brutal in places. So it’s a definite win for me.
As to whether or not I like it better than Twilight? I can’t really compare the two movies. Well, in the case of Twilight, there’s more than one movie, but I consider them all parts of a whole. If I HAD to pick, it would have to be Twilight. Mostly because it’s more my thing. Yeah, yeah, I know Bella is annoying. And Edward is controlling. But Jacob…now there’s someone that makes the movie worth watching. LOL If only Bella had made the right choice….
They are being compared because both were hugely successful franchises with female leads. That’s the big thing. And yeah Katniss is a much better role model than Bella.
Katniss was really kick butt, wasn’t she? 🙂
They’re being compared because they’re the biggest YA successes in recent years. I enjoyed both the books and the first Hunger Games film.
Twilight would also be my pick. I fell more in love with the characters and setting than those from The Hunger Games.
I guess I can kind of understand what you mean about both of them being huge successes. But it’s just hard for me to compare the two because they are so different. I read the Twilight books but never read The Hunger Games books. I don’t usually read the books AFTER I’ve seen the movie. It’s always the other way around.
I try to read the books before seeing the movie too. Do you think you might give The Hunger Games books a go?
No, I probably won’t read the books since I’ve already seen the movie. Besides, I have so many books on my TBR list, I’ll never get through them all. LOL
The only reason I couldn’t help but compare the two was because of the fact that they were both such huge crazes in the YA market. The two are really nothing alike, other than that… AND the underlying love triangles in both… AND the fact that the boys left behind are probably the boys I would have chosen in each situation. LOL
Overall, I felt like The Hunger games was a better movie. The story really pulled me in and I was rooting for Katniss, whereas I was left feeling like I wanted a little bit more in each of the Twilight films… more action, more vampires, etc… and I always wanted to shake or slap Bella.
But, I agree… Jacob… more Jacob!! That boy may still be under legal drinking age, but he makes me swoon. Luckily, I can from a distance without committing a crime. 🙂
I think the general consensus is that they are compared because of the YA market, like you said. The love triangle in The Hunger Games was a little understated compared to Twilight, but it was still there. And I agree with you…in both cases, I would have chosen the other guy. AND, I think Liam Hemsworth, although not as good looking as his brother, is VERY easy on the eye. 🙂
I still vote for Twilight, although I really liked the action in The Hunger Games. And, really…who DIDN’T want to slap Bella.
I’m much older than you, and I still thought Jacob was hot…even when he was seventeen, which made me feel kind of…ick. Because he was younger than my sons. But that’s what fiction is for, right?
Amen! Bella should have chosen Jacob. I’ll never understand why she didn’t. A friend said it was because Stephanie Meyer would have pissed off her vampire fans if she didn’t. That might be the case.
I haven’t seen either movie, and I only read the beginning of Twilight, so I can’t compare the two. I am surprised people are comparing the two at all. From what I understand, the only similarity is that they’re YA.
Didn’t Meyer worry about her werewolf fans? LOL. Seriously, Jacob would have been so good to her. She wouldn’t have had to change for him. He didn’t try to control her, he just loved her. And she kept playing with his emotions. Grrrrr.
