A few days ago, I finished listening to the audio book of Dark Lover, the first in J. R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. At first, I was skeptical. THIS was the series that everyone was talking about? What was so special about it? I didn’t think I would continue the series. Then, about halfway through the book, I got hooked. I don’t know how it happened, but it suddenly became more than what I thought it was going to be. So now it looks like I’ll get a Black Dagger Brotherhood audio book every month when I get my credit. They are too expensive to buy at full price, but with Audible, you get a credit each month for something like $14.95, so you can get $25-$30 books for much less.
I got an email from Audible saying they had some audio books on sale for $5.95. Much to my surprise, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Laini Taylor, was included in this sale. I had heard Kait Nolan talk about how good it was, so I thought I would check it out; at that price I couldn’t go wrong. Oh my stars! This book is SO good. I’ve been listening to it for several days now (to and from work) and I love it! The narrator is really good at doing different voices for the characters. Folks, you NEED to read this book.
Netflix is full of awesome. (Although, there are a few movies and series I can’t find on there, I do realize they can’t have EVERYTHING.) I’ve found many things to watch. Lately, I’ve been watching Star Trek. Yes, the original series with my hero Mr. Spock. But last night I wanted to watch a movie. I just couldn’t figure out what I was in the mood for. Then I found it. Labyrinth! I love this movie, and it had been a long time since I had seen it. Yes, I still think David Bowie is hot in this movie. 🙂 If you haven’t seen this one, check it out. The Jim Henson creatures are great!
What have you read or watched lately? Has anything just blown you away? I want to know!
I had the exact same response to Dark Lover. I was sneering at the names (and the spellings–which you wouldn’t notice in the audio version) and rolling my eyes, and somewhere in the middle something clicked for me, making this a MUST BUY series. I can’t explain it either.
Maybe it’s magic. LOL
I knew about the name spellings. That’s why Zoe had to listen to audio…she couldn’t get past that. Some people had also mentioned the “street talk” in the dialogue, but I almost didn’t notice. It didn’t distract me at all. You feel me? True. Hahahahahahaha.
Yeah that gets more prominent as the series goes on. I still have no freaking clue how this ancient, formal vampire race (you’ll notice the Old World language more in later books) somehow evolved such that the Brothers all sound like educated thugs.
:Netflix Flail: If you like stuff like Pride and Prejudice and haven’t seen North and South, it’s a MUST SEE. http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/North_South/70202593
I think Veronica Mars is not to be missed. Strong, brilliant, gutsy young woman character, and there should be more of those in teen land. She’s like Nancy Drew, if Nancy Drew were totally awesome and had a Blackberry.
I just added North & South to my queue. I remember hearing some of you talking about that one. At first, I thought you were talking about the other North & South. LOL
I can’t find Veronica Mars on Netflix. Maybe it’s just on the DVD version of Netflix, which I don’t have.
Oh, I just added Fire with Fire. You had told me about this movie that Saturday we were hanging out, but I couldn’t remember the name of it. I was going to ask you, but then I just remembered I had put it in my phone. LOL
You for your appiness. You inspired me on that, btw. I’m taking my life back with Evernote. But anyway, on to Veronica…

Yeah, I’m an appy person. I’m glad I could help. LOL
It was just as I thought. The link shows it’s available on the DVD service that I don’t have (it’s an extra $7.99 a month). I may add that later after I’ve exhausted everything I can watch on the instant watch version.
I’m sure that used to be on streaming. Sometimes they rotate things out. Check back sometime because they might bring it back.
Oh! Finding a good book is so satisfying. I’m on a Native American binge right now. I’ve read, Boundless Faith: Early American Women’s Captivity Narratives, Comanche Moon (which was really quite good), and will begin My LIfe As An Indian. I’m also working through Reagan And Thatcher: The Difficult Relationship.
I rarely watch television, but did see the new(er) Conan movie with my good friend last week. We popped two bags of popcorn, curled up on her sofa with a drink table between us ( a girl’s mouth can go dry when looking at such manly-ness), and settled in for a hour and a half of man-candy mania. We added our own dialogue…we narrated along with Morgan Freeman…we completely enjoyed it. :} Haven’t watched anything since, but I want to watch Pride and Prejudice after reading Susan’s comment. I ♥ that movie! (well, the one with Kiera Knightly….the man they have as Mr. Darcy is wonderful).
Oh well….off to accomplish more typing….
Sounds like you had a fun girls’ night. 🙂
I haven’t seen Pride & Prejudice yet. Every time it’s been on TV, there’s been some reason I couldn’t see it, like maybe it was already halfway through it or something. I looked at Netflix, and the only version they have is the 1980 version.
I hope your fingers don’t give out on you. LOL
So the BDB has sucked you in then huh? I knew it would. If you like it you might like the series by Lara Adrian (Midnight Breed Series). It’s similar to BDB.
I may have to go back myself and watch Star Trek. I never did see all the original episodes. I’m more of a Next Generation fan myself. Love Capt. Picard!
Yeah, I have to admit I’m hooked. I’m not a big fan of series except for a select few (like the Agent Pendergast series by Lincoln and Child!), but I think I’ll see how far I can get in this one. I can’t wait for Zsadist’s story.
I love the original. It was kind of cheesy, but that’s part of the appeal to me. I like Next Generation, too, but the rest of the Star Treks were just ok.
Labyrinth is one of my favourite films. I remember watching it as a kid and falling in love with the Goblin King. I’m actually singing the song now “What kind of magic spell to use? Slime and snails? Or puppy dog tails?” 🙂
Isn’t it a great film? It was so magical! 🙂
