After all the problems with my laptop, I’m now only two words behind on my goal. Two words! You would think I would have thought of just two more words to write. LOL.

In other news…I’m reading a book where the writing is so awful, I can’t believe I’m still reading it. The thing is, the story is interesting enough to make me want to know what’s happening next. I keep wondering if I’m EVER going to finish this! Ugh. I actually downloaded a sample and it wasn’t bad. But the writing just kept getting worse. I can’t wait to start on something else so I can purge my mind of this book. I’m usually very easy to please, so if I don’t like it, most people won’t. It even switched from 1st person to 3rd person a few chapters into the book, which felt very strange. I know now how I can torture “The Pink Hammer”. Make her read this book. Hahahahahaha,

Ok, ok, I know. I’m a day late checking in. Sunday was just a whirlwind of STUFF. Anyway, I’m a couple of days behind on my word count, but I finally have my computer back. Yay! So no excuses now. I see no reason why I can’t catch up to my goal word count in a few days. I’ve got the next scene in my head. :0)

ROW80 Round Two

Round One is over, and I didn’t get everything accomplished because of things going on in my life. But Round Two starts tomorrow and it’s a new challenge.

Goals:

1. Write an average of 500 words per day until my novella (part one of a series) is done. I’m expecting it to be somewhere around 25,000 to 30,000 words. So that will take 50 to 60 days. That will give me 20-30 days left to edit and get some people beta reading it. The editing goal will depend on how much time I have after writing the first draft, so that goal will be set later.

2. My secondary goal is to spend a little bit of time working on my garden gnome story from Round One. This isn’t a “have to” goal, just an aside if I have time. I can’t really give this one a measurable goal, so it’s kind of a maybe.

Good luck to everyone. Go writers!

As I look back on the first round of ROW80, I have some mixed feelings. I was doing so well at meeting my goals until my mom had a heart attack. The good thing about ROW80 is that it’s very forgiving and allows you to change your goals at any time. But I didn’t even set any new goals. This was mostly due to the tremendous work load from my full time job. I just can’t take that much work home and still write. Some people might be able to do it, but I just don’t have that much stamina. So I didn’t finish my book.

Turning to the bright side…Round Two is coming up and my work will hopefully slow down to the point that I won’t have to take work home with me. I won’t mention my ROW80 goals in this post because I’m sure there will be a chance to state those at the beginning of Round Two. I will mention one thing, though. I am determined to get in better shape physically because when I’m in control of my body, I seem to be in much better control of my mind. Funny how it works that way, but it always does for me. When I’m in control of one aspect of my life, the others start falling into place and it’s like a chain reaction.

I’ve really enjoyed doing this challenge with all of you. Even when I was really busy, I tried to be a halfway decent sponsor and encourage those in my group for that check in. I think I only missed 2 or 3 check ins when things were the worst.

Congrats to everyone who met their goals, and for those who didn’t, it’s not failure…just restructuring. I look forward to seeing familiar faces (figuratively, lol) and, hopefully, some new ones, too. Good look with Round Two!

Most of you know that my mom had a heart attack and has been in the hospital. I haven’t written anything in about two weeks. And now I’m so busy at my full time job, I have been bringing work home with me. Spring is never a good time to try to do anything but my job. 😦

Anyway, I’m setting new goals. For this round, my goal is to not beat myself up over what I haven’t gotten done. For round two, one of my goals is to finish round one’s project if I didn’t get finished, then work on something new. See, I can stay positive about things!

And can I rant a little about why I dislike Blogspot (I’m sorry for those of you who use it, but…)? Anyway, I can deal with having to key in my “open id” and specify that it’s WordPress. I don’t mind keying in the captcha letters (WordPress does this, too), but I run in to constant glitches. One is that sometimes the captcha letters don’t show up until I’ve clicked “post” several times. Then, today, as a ROW80 sponsor, I tried to comment on one of the posts to give encouragement, even though my time is limited right now. And I got this crazy message that my open ID credentials could not be verified! And I had just commented on another post on Blogspot and it worked fine. I tried several times, but to no avail. Now I can’t comment on the blog that I’m supposed to be a sponsor for this week. So, for those of you who use Blogspot…do you have issues like this when you’re commenting on WordPress blogs? Or is it just the other way around?

My goal is to write an average of 500 words per day. Right now, I’m about 1300 words behind. I’ve had some different things going on that’s hindered me, but I wrote 1193 words last night. So if I keep writing more than my average I’ll eventually catch up. If I stop taking days off….

As of right now, I’m about a day behind in word count. But at one point I was almost three days behind, so not too bad. I can make up that extra 500-600 words in no time.

My problem right now is that I feel like my story is dragging a little. I don’t want to get into the action too quickly, but I’m afraid I’ve put in too much stuff that’s unnecessary. But at the same time, I’ve had complaints, especially in the novellas, that I didn’t put in enough about the characters or the places. There are some people who want more detail and some who want less. You can’t please everyone. So what do you do? I just don’t want the story to drag on and on until the scary part starts. One thing I need to go back and do is give a little back story on the male MC. I don’t think we know enough about him.

So, here’s some questions. Do you like to know a lot or just a little about the characters in a book? Do you care about the minor characters? How much do you want to know about them? And do you want to delve deeply into the psyche of the MC’s, or do you just want to get to the action?

I’m still doing fine. My goal is 500 words per day, which for me isn’t necessarily that I have to write that many a day, but that I average that. I took a day off on Friday because I was 996 words ahead of goal, and I got in late that night. Then on Saturday I wrote 1187 words, so I’m back to 1183 words ahead of goal. I haven’t done my writing for today, but I see no problems with that. I think I know what’s going to happen next.

Oh how I wish I didn’t work a full time job!

I had two goals for ROW80. One of them was to get Haunted Lake edited. Well, I kind of cheated on that one because I had two whole days off from work, so I edited during that time, before ROW80. After finding a few typos, a couple of discrepancies, and one really obvious contradiction (my beta readers didn’t even catch it, lol), I think I have it finished. I’m one of those writers that edits chapter by chapter as I write so that I don’t have as much to edit later. So that goal is accomplished…even if I cheated by starting early. But I saw no reason to waste those two days. And, unlike NaNo, you don’t get slapped on the hand for this.

Also, I’m ahead on word count by a little over 500. My goal was 500 words per day, and I wrote 991 the first day. On the second day, I struggled to get word count in (but I did it) because I’m not loving this story yet. But I felt the same way about Guardian Vampire and it ended up being the best thing I had written. So I’m not giving up on this baby.
