I used to think I would never get tired of CSI. That it was the greatest show in the world. Then CSI: Miami. Then CSI: New York. But then there were so many shiny new shows! Shows that were different. And the DVR just keeps filling up. When will I have time to write??? *wrings hands*
My husband and I have had Directv for years. When U-Verse finally came to our house, we chose to only take the internet service. We stuck with Directv. One of the reasons I didn’t want U-Verse TV is that you can DVR four shows instead of two! Sounds great, doesn’t it? But when would I actually watch all those shows. I work 8 or more hours a day, 5 days a week. I need writing time. I need cleaning house time. I need exercise time. WHEN can I watch that much TV? Oh, and then there’s Netflix. I have so many things queued up to watch. And I haven’t finished watching my Twin Peaks DVDs. I haven’t finished watching my Buffy DVDs (for about the 6th time). And I HAVE to watch Moonlight again!
I discovered the other day that I had 4 CSI:New York’s and about that many CSI and Criminal Minds on the DVR. I’m behind watching The Mentalist. I’m going to have to trim something down, but I don’t know what to give up. I’ve added The Vampire Diaries, Grimm, Once Upon a Time, and my FAVORITE, Person of Interest. I have to give up something. Well, actually I did give up one show. My husband was disappointed to find that The River, which he was waiting for anxiously, came on at the same time as one of his other shows and one of mine…Ringer. He was just going to have to skip it. He thought. But I love my hubby so much and didn’t want to disappoint him. So I gave up Ringer for The River. I actually wanted to watch it, too, so it wasn’t that hard. I’ll really miss Ringer, and maybe I can catch it on Netflix later.
Well, I watched 3 out of 4 of the CSI: New Yorks. I may keep that one. But I may ditch CSI. It’s not been the same without Grissom anyway. I’ve already ditched CSI: Miami. I don’t know if I can give up Criminal Minds.
I know I’ve been kind of rambly, but I have a hard time giving up shows and I’m feeling kind of angsty about it. What about you? When it just gets overwhelming, how do you decide what to give up and what to keep? How do you find the time to watch everything? I would really like to know!
I can’t keep up with anything, so I wait and overindulge myself on a weekend every now and then to catch up. The same with books really. I can’t get to everything I want to regularly, then I’ll go crazy for like a week and read until I can’t bear it anymore.
Netflix just came out over here recently. There isn’t that much on it yet, but we’ve been watching Dexter, and the kids are watching Power Rangers. Over, and over, and over again. It sucked when I was a kid and it was my brother’s favourite thing eva. It’s even worse now. π
If it were me, I’d skip the house cleaning time, get an exercise bike and watch the shows while exercising. Sorted. π
Claire, it can all get so overwhelming. Right now, I read while walking on the treadmill. Because my TBR pile is bigger than my DVR pile!
Oh, no, my kids watched Power Rangers, too!
OMG, Lauralynn…I watch all of these and I do have Uverse so I can record 4 shows at once. I am an addict. I have a problem.
Regarding CSI, I agree that it hasn’t been the same wince Warrick and Grissom left…but I do like the add of Ted Danson (I liked Fishburne too), and I’m looking forward to Elisabeth Shue this week. Katherine was getting a bit whiny to me, and I’d like a new dynamic. I also like NY and Miami, although Horatio gets on my last nerve. NY may be my winner over all three.
How do I find the time to watch everything? Would you believe I don’t even turn my TV on until 7pm at night? That’s the truth. The DVR saves 20 minutes of each hour long show that I watch, and we watch one right after the other starting around 7 or 8pm. I like to stay up late, so we manage to watch a lot of our TV this way. Some things can wait, but some shows can’t like Bones, Person of Interest, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Hawaii Five-0, Justified, Burn Notice, etc…we save most of our TV for the weekends, but our top shows like these get watched same day or I can’t stand it.
Like I said, I have a serious problem….
NY is actually my favorite CSI. It may be the only one I keep. Hubby is pretty much over CSI anyway.
I don’t get home until 5:30 or after, so I really can’t start watching much earlier than 7 unless I turn the TV right on. I can’t stay up late since I get up so early in the morning. I’m like you about some of those shows. I have to watch them the same day, especially Vampire Diaries and Person of Interest.
If I wasn’t writing, I could watch all these shows with no problem. But since it could seriously cut into writing time, I have to cut back. If only I didn’t have that full time job….
Gave up on watching The Secret Circle. As like you, I WILL NOT give up my reading time on my kindle.
I HAVE to read. And i HAVE to write. Then I can watch TV. π
That’s when you give up all the crap shows for the ones that are decent and according to the ones you listed…. you’ll have A LOT of free space for good shows.
– Your awesome son
Bite me. LOL
Welcome to my blog, btw. π
Sounds like you just have to decide how much time you can give to TV. Criminal Minds, Vampire Diaries and Person of Interest are musts, so is there anything else? Or can they wait until they’re on Netflix?
As for me, I base my TV watching on my level of interest. If I’ve got a show on and start finding other things to do, I drop it.
Andrew, I’m pretty serious about Once Upon a Time and Grimm. And Hawaii Five-O. Those are musts, I think. Other stuff may just have to go.
There are so many good shows on now, I’m being lured into watching more. I can’t miss The Walking Dead on AMC–ever! The season premiere last night was intense. I also like Being Human on Syfy. Now, there’s Preppers and The River. Grimm’s kinda interesting too. I often try to multitask so it doesn’t feel like wasted time, but I feel like I learn a lot about story telling from some of these shows about character development and building suspense. It could also be considered “research” if it helps you keep a finger on the pulse of what’s hot in entertainment. Sometimes, one of these shows is my only down time all day, so I try not to chide myself for watching when I can.
How did you like The River? I thought it was good.
I have so many shows to watch. Too many, apparently, since the DVR is filling up. I’ve actually started getting up earlier on Saturdays, my only sleep in day, so I can knock out some of those DVR’d shows. LOL
I was a little put off at first by the shaky Blair Witch type camera work. It was also a little more violent than I’d expected on a network show. (Normally, I’d have no problem with that, but my kidling started watching it with me and is very interested in it.) I bet this story would make a fantastic book. (Is it based on a book?) As a movie, they have to focus so much on the action that there’s a lot of interesting nuances and dark spiritual stuff that could add to the story, but are glossed over. The tree with all the dolls was really creepy!
Oh, the dolls! VERY creepy.
Ok I have to comment here. I kind of feel out of place with the rest of you guys because I really don’t watch all that much TV. The only show I have to be sure I watch right now is Vampire Diaries…because…well, Damon ya know? π
Anyway, I guess I would rather just read than watch TV. If my hubby and son are watching stuff I will sort of follow what they are watching which means I get hit with shows like Swamp People, Ice Road Truckers and Gold Rush. All those reality shows that Lauralynn can’t stand. hahahaha!
I have noticed that we seem to watch a lot of FoodTv Network. I told my hubby it must be food porn. He watches it because I don’t cook enough real food for him! heehee
You’re so funny. You would like Person of Interest if you watched it. Because, you know, Jim Caviezel. LOL.
If I read TOO much, I get sleepy. π
