Hubby and I are on vacation this week. We spent part of Tuesday, all of Wednesday, and part of Thursday in Gatlinburg. It looks like Oz wants me to pay attention to him instead of being on the computer. You can see in the picture, he’s on top of the mouse pad and has knocked the mouse askew.
We usually try to stay out of the art gallery in Gatlinburg because we can’t really afford anything there, and then we get depressed because we can’t. We both love good art. This year, they were featuring a new artist who is only 22 years old, and he is completely self taught. His name is Abraham Hunter. We immediately fell in love with his art. They happened to have some canvas wraps (I think that’s what they’re called; they are square and the canvas wraps around the sides) that were only $89, so we bought one. The picture I really wanted was $550, but we just couldn’t afford that (it was 18 x 27 signed and numbered) and if you’re interested in seeing that one, here’s the link: Light of Faith.
And here’s the canvas wrap I bought. It’s called Sunset Cove. This picture does NOT do it justice.
What about you? Do you love good art? Do you have any pieces at home that are special to you?
I love good art! This young fellow’s going to go far if his work is in a gallery already. I have a Kentucky Derby poster that was done by the singer Tony Bennett (using his real name). It’s numbered. There’s also a artist I went to high school with who has become quite well known (Loren Salazar). He is quite original in his techniques. I love some of his newer work. He incorporates images that are public domain (like the painting of the girl with the pearl earring) with his own.
I also like going to museums to see showings or old masters.
Sounds like vacation was a success.
Hubby and I love art, but we can rarely afford what we want. I agree that this young man will do well. The gallery manager said he was a very nice guy. He’s going to be in the gallery in August doing drawings on the back of canvasses of any of his art you buy. I’m tempted….
We aren’t art snobs. We like what we like. We love Thomas Kinkade, and the print we have (Stillwater Bridge) is apparently worth about five times what we paid for it. It’s number 174 of 1000. We also have a Yellow Submarine cell. It’s weird because the art has one layer laid over another layer to make the picture. We got both pictures at an art auction on a cruise years ago.
I didn’t know Tony Bennett was an artist. What a multi-talented guy. Does the artist you went to high school with know you’re also an artist? Writing is an art! 🙂
I love art, Lauralynn, and one of my childhood dreams was to have original art in my house. I have a dear friend in Bristol, UK, who went back to painting after a long stretch away, and I am so glad she did. I posted a picture of one of her paintings that I own on one of my blogs: https://lapidaryprose.wordpress.com/2015/06/08/first-friday-photo-blog-hop-2/
She is very talented, and my mother passed on her love of flowers, if not her ability to grow then!
That’s a lovely picture, Elizabeth. Such detail. I love flowers, too.
There’s so much art I would love to have if I could afford it. I have two pictures that I got in the Bahamas that were painted by locals. I love those, too, and they weren’t expensive at all.
I do love good art! As a painter and artist, I can lost in a museum and all the different worlds each painting can take me too. I actually recently painted a flower on some drift wood a coworker found.
I didn’t realize you were an artist! Unless my feeble brain just forgot. I would love to see some of your stuff. Is it on your blog?
Abraham Hunter – great name for a future character in one of your books perhaps?
You know…you just might have something there.
Wow! He has a lot of talent, and it looks like he loves it if he taught himself to do it. Good for him!
I do love art (esp. the kind you have in this post), but I haven’t bought any. Too many pictures of the kiddos. 🙂
We have a combination of art and family pictures. I love both. 🙂
