I had to think a little while before deciding to post this. Sometimes we share such personal things on our blogs, and I have a hard time deciding what to share. How personal should we get? I’m really a pretty open person about most things, so I do post a lot of personal stuff on here. I just feel like all my regular blog readers are my friends. *takes deep breath*. Anyway, I’m going to share this. Some of you read my post about my suspicion that I had diabetes. My mom, as well as many other family members, have this disease. I finally got the courage to go to my mom’s and let her test my blood sugar on her meter. I was shocked at how high it was. The reading was 339! It’s supposed to be around 100 or so. I hadn’t had supper yet, so it definitely shouldn’t have been that high. It’s time to make some lifestyle changes.
Well, now I know why I’ve been so fatigued lately. What really made me suspect diabetes was the terrible thirst I was experiencing. Also, I’ve lost 7 lbs. in the last 3-4 weeks, which would have been awesome, but I had no reason to have lost that weight.
I’m going to put my writing on hold until I get all this straightened out. I’ll still do my sponsor duties for ROW80 and I’ll be coming back in the next round. I’m going to the doctor in the morning, and I suspect I’ll be on medication for high blood sugar AND for high blood pressure. This is a rude awakening, and I’m going to lose weight and exercise regularly from now on. Hopefully, I won’t have to be on medication for a long period of time. We shall see.
Having an answer is always better than not. Now you’ll be able to formulate a plan of action. Best of luck.
Exactly. I was pretty sure I knew what the problem was. Now if I can only avoid getting the flu while I’m at the doctor’s office. It’s running rampant in my town.
Glad you are going to doctor to find out what’s going on. We want to keep you around and healthy. Love ya!
I meant to email you before I hit the “publish” button, but my finger was faster than my brain. LOL. Anyway, I’m glad I finally had my mom stick my finger. My blood sugar was much higher than what I was expecting. 😦 But I’m going to get that taken care of tomorrow.
No problem! I understand how mixed up your mind is right now. 😉
At least you know what’s going on. That’s a big thing. Do what’s best for you. We’ll be here for you 🙂
Thank you, Ryan.
I’m sorry. Even if you suspect something, it’s hard to hear the news. 😦
I hope exercise and a change in diet is all you’ll need to do. My mom had diabetes, and she didn’t have to take meds. *fingers crossed* I’ll say a prayer for you.
I hope I can care of it with diet and exercise. I’ll probably have to take meds at first since the number was so high. But maybe I can bring it down. My mom has to take insulin shots. I don’t want to go there.
A lot of people would be too scared to investigate and would rather not know. You proved you’re not one of those people. If you can do that, you can definitely make the changes you need to stay healthy.
Thanks, Andrew. I was afraid to find out, but I was more afraid NOT to find out. I definitely have diabetes according to the doctor, and he gave me samples of medicine and actually gave me a testing meter. I also got meds for high blood pressure. I should start feeling better soon.
I’m thinking about you miles away and sending you positive, healthy thoughts. I hope 2013 brings you vibrant health and joy 🙂
Thank you so much, Michelle! 🙂
Oh Lauralynn! I am so sorry to hear the news. I hope you feel better soon. We’re all pulling for you. Thanks for sharing.
Vicki, what really makes me mad is that I knew diabetes ran in our family and I still didn’t take care of myself. Sometimes it takes a rude awakening to make us take care of things. So I’m going to exercise faithfully, because the doc said that’s the best thing. And I have to watch my diet. And take medicine.
The first step to getting help, is knowing you need help. And both diseases are completely managable with meds, exercise, and diet control. Best wishes and best of luck to you LL.
Chris, I’ve watched my mom NOT manage her diabetes. I’m surprised she’s not had worse health problems. I’m determined to do what I’m supposed to. I don’t want to be insulin dependent.
Hi Lauralynn. At least you know now and can adapt your diet and exercise routine, so you’re feeling better. Hope you’re doing okay.
Emma, it’s going to be hard to adapt to a lower carb diet, but I know I can do it. I just have to have self control. I’m a little down about it, but I’ll be fine. I’m a natural optimist. 🙂
Hi Lauralynn. If you were going to have a disease at least you picked a well understood and highly manageable one. Now that you know what’s going on you can deal with it and be healthy.
May you receive the best care and advice from the most caring and qualified endocrinologist.
Do not let this prevent you from having a great holiday season.
That’s, true, Jay. At least it’s manageable. I just have to do what I’m suppose to. I’ve seen my grandmother (who died at 70) and my mother (still hanging on on 78) do a really poor job at handling their diabetes. I want to break that cycle.
I rarely let things get me down. The only thing bothering me about the holidays is that I don’t have my shopping done! 🙂
