I just got an email that said Stephen King’s novel, 11/22/63 will be released on Nov. 8, so I guess you can pre-order. There was a link to the Amazon page. The “enhanced” ebook is $18.99. The hard cover edition is on sale for $18.42 (reg. $35.00). This is just wrong. And people wonder why some authors want to be indie?
The first ebook I ever loaded on my Kindle on Christmas day was Stephen King’s “Under the Dome”. It was $9.99. I thought that was a lot for a book that didn’t have any paper, ink, or other “physical” costs. But, hey, it was Stephen King, right? I’ve never paid that much for an ebook since. When I saw this email today, I was shocked. $18.99 for an ebook? Why wouldn’t I just buy the hard cover? It makes me think that might be the whole point. Trying to sell the hard cover edition instead of the ebook. I have no idea.
I wonder if I’ll get any hate mail because of this post. LOL.
Well that’s the point. Traditional publishers aren’t recognizing that ebooks are not competing for hardcover or even paperback sales–they are, in fact, entirely different markets. But they believe the same people are going to buy paper if the ebook is more expensive and that’s their critical error.
I kind of felt like that’s what they were really trying to do. They just don’t get it. My head is still reeling from the price. I guess it’s because this is the first time I’ve seen an ebook priced this high.
Doesn’t make those 2.99 books look so bad does it? Simple; they are trying to get the e-book reader back into the book stores and buying paper books again. They have seen to many stores close. Just my opinion!
Have you started anything on Kat’s Decision? Look forward to hearing you thoughts and changes. Thanks!
Peace,
Jon
You’re right, just as Kait was. But publishers are going to have to change the direction they are going.
Kat’s Decision? I just now got finished with the edits, then publishing Secrets of the Wolf. I promise I’ll get to is as soon as I can, but I have to get my stuff done first. I should have some time between now and the start of the third round of ROW80. Although, I am trying to get the print version of Starfane out there. But I think I can do those two things at once.
When do you want to think about getting Memphis Connection out in print? It’s just $39 to get it in expanded distribution.
I’m going to let my mom proof your books after I do my part. Even after I had a beta reader that edits for a living read SOTW, my mom still found one more thing. She’s really good at proofing! It’s good to have as many eyes as possible on a book.
