I’m a little disappointed this week. My goal is 3,000 words per week. I only wrote 1,663. And I did it all in one day. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are my writing days. I was all fired up on Thursday when I wrote those words. On Friday, I couldn’t wait to get home from work and get some writing done. But my mom called and wanted me to go out to eat with her, my son, his fiancee, and their little girl. I couldn’t say no because I wanted to spend time with them. When I got home, it was late and I was tired. I don’t know WHY I didn’t write yesterday. I THINK it might be all those spooky Halloween movies I was watching. LOL. I had to go into work for a couple of hours, which kind of ruined my day, but had to be done. Then I went to the grocery store. Spending all that money kind of depressed me because you don’t get many groceries for a huge amount. 😦 But it was mostly the movies.
I’m going to have to rearrange my schedule, I think. I wanted to have those three writing days so I could get other stuff that needed to be done over with at the beginning of the week. But now I’m thinking I might ought to just write when I get a chance, no matter what day it is so I won’t sabotage myself at the end of the week if something comes up. I’m going to try that this week and see what happens.
At least you got some writing done at it was more that half your goal. That’s a good start!
That’s a great way to look at it! 🙂
I’m reading a book that suggests writing down your goals for the day and picking the top three that must get done. Then those three are ones I try to do as early in the day as possible. This includes the exercise I tend to ignore if the day gets too long. It’s been helping to get to those as soon as possible. I know you have to work, so it’s not like you can wake up and get to writing right away, but I like your idea of planning it for earlier in the week. I’ve found the sooner I can get to things in the day or week, the better off I am.
Good luck, Lauralynn. I know it’s not easy to juggle a job, living real life, and writing.
I think working on the book earlier in the week will make it easier. I just need to make sure I don’t neglect the house and other things. My full time job is getting more complicated because we are trying to get started in exporting, and I’ll be in charge of that. Ick.
I do make sure exercise is number one priority in the mornings.
1,600 words is amazing especially with everything you’ve got going on. I have days where I don’t write and can’t explain why. Great advice about the to do list aswell. xx
It’s better than not writing at all, which was what was happening for WEEKS. I just need to learn to juggle things. It’s hard with a full time job, but other writers do it. I can if I put my mind to it. 🙂
Yay for spooky Halloween movies. Maybe they’ll inspire you to write lots next time you sit down with a pen/keyboard. 🙂
I love Halloween movies. 🙂
I agree that SOME writing is better than NO writing. I also think you’re on the right track to write as often as you get the chance. However, it’s still smart to try to clear some hours on your schedule for writing. The hard part is protecting those hours. Clue your mother in that you’d rather go out to eat on ?? instead of one of your writing days. (I have that same battle between wanting to be available and setting boundaries. Very tough to keep in balance.)
Watching movies is research, though. Don’t feel too guilty. 🙂
I think it’s a good idea to schedule writing time, but at the same time, be able to be flexible if you have to. I think my biggest problem was waiting until the end of the week to schedule the time, which doesn’t allow for the things that might get in the way. My mom and son don’t ask me to go out to eat that often, so I don’t mind doing that. But I plan on scheduling my writing time this week and see if I can MAKE myself do it. I got so much out of the habit of writing often when I was struggling with my WIP that it made it hard to get back on track. It’s a new week! 🙂
Of course movies are research. Everyone knows that. Hahahahaha.
I tend to write late at night or early in the morning.
I do my cardio in the mornings, and late at night I’m way too tired to write. If I can do it pretty soon after I get home from work, just after dinner, that usually works best for me. Mid morning is when I’m most alert, but unfortunately, that’s when I’m at my day job. 🙂
Yes it is easy to get distracted by family and great scary movies. You still got some writing done, and next week you’ll blow this past weeks total out of the water!
Now you’ve been it impossible for me NOT to beat last week’s word count. LOL
