Okay, I’m feeling generous today. Why? Because Guardian Vampire is now at #323 at Amazon. Squeeeeee! It topped at #135 at Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago and usually stays in the top 200 there. I have made as much money in January though all channels as I did at my regular full time job in the month of January. So I just want to celebrate. So I’m giving away Guardian Vampire, Haunted Lake, or BOTH through midnight EST Sunday, Jan. 30. All you have to do is ask for it in the comments on this post. You can ask for either book or both. (Hint-I would ask for both.) On Monday, I will send out coupon codes for Smashwords to everyone that asked for books. The codes will be good for two weeks, so redeem them fast.

Okay, since I was all about ranting and raving and whining yesterday about that insane person who reviewed my book without reading it, I thought I would post about something positive today. Actually, I found out about this yesterday before the craziness happened, but all that mess put a damper on things for me. But today, I thought I would share a link to a good review that made me very happy.

The following is a one star review I got which I consider slander to my character:

just so we’re clear, i didn’t bother buying this book simply because of the short excerpt from he book i read before i bought it. ok the vampires name is logan steel, sounds sexy enough, with one problem- the charactors name was taken from another book!! this book was published after a book that i have already read. this same charactor was in the book “biting nixie” to a “t” so to speak. all the way down to the detail of the charactor. if you’re going to write a book and steal ( no pun intended) a charactor from another, at least change them a bit to reflect your own personal interest in the charactor.

and to boot not only was he in a different book, but another book from mary hughes was based solely on his charactor in another biting romance novel. i’m utterly disappointed in peoples lack of imagination in creating their own work.

again i say that i haven’t bought this book, nor do i intend on doing so simply because of the lack of imagination put into this book. however if you are someone who enjoys a well thought out storyline and charactors i would refer you to mary hughes biting love series. especially “biting nixie”.

I usually don’t answer bad reviews, but no one calls my character into question without a rebuttal:

Just for the record… I have never read nor heard of another book with a character named Logan Steele. I would NEVER steal anything from someone else’s book. That’s deplorable and I just don’t do it! If you read a book and don’t like it, and it deserves a one star review, then so be it. But it is mean and nasty to assume a character was stolen, and give a one star review, without even contacting an author to see if…wow…you might be wrong. I hope you reconsider and change your review since you have accused me unjustly and that’s neither fair nor morally right. If your conscience can allow you to let it stand…then that’s something you’ll have to live with. My conscience is clear.

My friend Anya got an email from Amazon telling about new releases in Vampire Romance. I got it, too, but didn’t read it. LOL. Anyway, she scrolled through the pages and found Guardian Vampire on page 5. So the question is…do people look that far? Do they scroll through that many pages, or do they stop at the first couple? I’m a scroller because I don’t want to miss anything. But people are kind of impatient these days. So are they too impatient to browse a lot?

Just a side note concerning the bad Amazon review I got the other day. Since that day, my rank has been steadily declining. It may be that bad reviews mean more than I thought. I’m still at 900, but I had gotten up to 563. Or maybe it had just run its course.

Another word concerning ratings and reviews. B & N gives people the ability to just rate something without having to review or without letting anyone know who they are. I think this is making people more likely to rate, since they don’t have to actually think or write down anything. Because I have 3 reviews on Amazon for GV, but on B & N I have 26 ratings (4 of which are reviews). I don’t know if this is good or bad for authors, but it definitely makes it easier for readers to give an opinion…just click a star.

I usually don’t post twice in one day but I just checked my ranking on Amazon for Guardian Vampire. It’s #36 in Romance:Vampires and #40 in Kindle Ebooks:Romance:Romantic Suspense and #45 in Romance:Romantic Suspense. My sales suddenly jumped today. Wow! Overall, I’m at #1,864. That’s not huge, but I’m not crying about it. :0)

I’m a little over 4200 in ranking at Barnes and Noble.

I was just so excited I wanted to tell someone. Those numbers may not be a big deal for some authors, but they are for me!

I’ve been very disappointed in my books sales on Amazon. I thought there would be a sudden rush of sales because of new Kindles. Sales are still trickling. Although, last year, when I first got my Kindle, I downloaded the Stephen King book I wanted and didn’t download anything else until I was finished with it. So I’m still hoping the rush will come.

On the other hand, sales of my new book, Guardian Vampire, are doing well on Barnes and Noble. I’m selling about four times more of that particular book on B & N than on Amazon. And, so far, I’m still averaging a 5 star rating. Yay! I finally got into the 4 digit numbers there. I got into the three digits numbers with Club Blood last summer on Amazon, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed with Guardian Vampire…if not on Amazon, then on B & N. :0)

Jonathan Eli! Jonathan has won a free copy of The Gardener by Michelle DePaepe. He already has a copy of Guardian Vampire, so I guess I’ll just have to figure out something else to give him. LOL

Today I’m interviewing Michelle DePaepe, author of The Gardener. One commenter will be receiving a coupon code from Smashwords for a free copy of The Gardener and also one for my new novella, Guardian Vampire. So without further ado, here we go.

When did you become interested in writing?

It’s funny to me that I grew up as such a bookworm, and I wrote some poetry and songs when I was banging around on a guitar as a teenager, but it didn’t occur to me that I could actually write a novel until sometime during college. When I got hooked on European history, I used to get fabulous grades on essays and loved literature, but never considered switching majors to focus on writing. (Maybe that was a rebellion thing…since my mother was an English teacher.) By the time I graduated, though, I knew that I wanted to write fiction. I wrote my first novel, A Demon Rose, in 1996. But, I consider that one to be a ‘training novel’ that will never see the light of publication. I wrote a lot of short stories after that, thinking that I was trying to run before learning to walk.

What genre interests you the most?

As a female, I have an uncommon penchant for horror–but not the type you see in slasher flicks or some of the low budget teen movies. I really like well written paranormal horror–the kind where you know it’s not a true story, but you’re still afraid to walk across a dark room at night after closing the book. When I was a kid, I lost a lot of sleep, staying up late and reading books by Stephen King, John Saul, Peter Straub, and F. Paul Wilson. They are true ‘kings’ of the genre. But, so much horror is written from the male perspective. I want to read and write more dark stories with female protagonists. I love anything with ghosts, vampires, demons, or ethereal dark creatures, and a woman who uses her brain to solve the conflict.

Who are you favorite authors?

There are so many! I love Anne Rice, Tanith Lee, Poppy Z. Brite, and Margaret Atwood. Some of my favorite male authors include Edward Lee, Bentley Little, William Peter Blatty, and James Reese. I also love older literature from authors like Nathaniel Hawthorne and Oscar Wilde, and classic horror from writers like Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, and H.P. Lovecraft.

What is The Gardener about?

I consider this novel to be ‘horror lite’. It’s a ghost story that includes a bit of romance. A small town psychic gets in over her head when she tries to contact her client’s dead husband and accidently brings back the ghost of a Victorian murderer instead. Shortly after, her client ends up dead, and the client’s daughter, an art gallery owner from New York City inherits the house where the ghost now resides. She finds herself falling for a sheriff’s deputy and the ghost who tries to worm his way into her heart. But, time is running out for all of them as the psychic desperately tries to find a way to undo her mistake as the bodies begin piling up in town. (I entered this novel in the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Colorado Gold Contest a few years ago, and it placed as a finalist in the competition. I’ve rewritten it since then, and I’m thrilled to have it published online as an indie author.)

What are you working on now?

I have a few projects in the works. I’m almost done with Eaters, a short novella. I could tell you that it’s about zombies, but it’s really about finding yourself in a crisis situation where your whole world is turned upside down and danger lurks at every turn. How do you hold it together, and how do you find the strength within yourself to do what’s necessary to survive? If you’ve gotten hooked on the AMC television series, ‘The Walking Dead’, you’ll like this story.

Thank you, Michelle. I hope you sell lots of copies after people get their new eBook readers for Christmas. :0) Everyone be sure to comment so you’ll be entered for two free eBooks!
