Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 8 days since I’ve written a blog post. I’m such a bad blogger. 😦
I had a great Thanksgiving at my Dad’s house. We’ve never had Thanksgiving there before and we had a houseful. Tomorrow (Saturday) is my turn to cook and I’m going to have a few people over, too. I’m going to be soooo tired tomorrow.
I also have a question. Is it wrong to use a reference to something in your book that not everyone will get? (I have that happen to me sometimes when I’m reading and I get a little annoyed by it, but it’s not a big deal.) And the people who will get it will think it’s funny, I think. No matter what kind of book I’m writing, I can’t seem to refrain from putting a little humor in it. Anyway, everyone my age and older and some a little younger will get the reference. Younger readers, I’m not sure. I guess it depends on whether you watched The Waltons or not. LOL
I think the best way to handle that is to try to do it in such a way that the readers who get it, get it, and the ones who don’t aren’t really aware they’ve missed anything. Easier said than done, though. If I did it and had betas coming back baffled by it, I’d take it out.
LOL, I think my betas will get it. Actually, the reference I used has been used numerous times before. I started thinking and realized it’s been used in commercials and TV shows. I think people will get it. It just fits at the end of a chapter so well.
Hope you had a great Thankgiving!
You should write your scene however you you like. As long as the reference isn’t crucial to understanding the story you’ll be okay.
And you may be surprised by how many people get it. There’s a quote from a writer, I can’t remember who, that goes “The audience is as smart as you let them be.”
Hey, Andrew, I don’t know why your comment got caught in “pending approval”. You’ve commented before. LOL
This is just a reference to that Waltons thing they did at the end of the show. You know, Goodnight John Boy, Goodnight Mary Ellen, etc. Unless you’re too young to remember….
Sure, I have them in mine. I would think it would be okay. You can’t watch everything you say in a book to make it make sense for everybody. Might just cause someone to learn something; WOW!
Yeah, I meant to talk to you about those references. Hahahahaha.
